Active Listening

Most people listen with the intent to reply. Active listeners listen with the intent to understand.

Key Techniques

1. Pay Full Attention

Put away your phone. Look at the speaker. Nod occasionally to show you are following.

2. Reflect Back

Paraphrase what you heard to confirm understanding.

• "So, if I understand correctly, the main bottleneck is the database query time?"

3. Ask Clarifying Questions

Don't assume. Ask open-ended questions.

• "Can you tell me more about that?"
• "What do you think caused that issue?"

4. Don't Interrupt

Let the speaker finish their thought before you jump in.
